To choose the right watch you have to start by looking at your lifestyle and your environment as your ultimate guide. The selection of a watch, in terms of style, design and brand, is purely based on individual taste. However, there are a few factors that you should take into account when selecting a watch from the thousands of models that are available.
First all of all determine your price point. In most cases, the cost of a watch is a consideration, but there is no formula for determining how much you should spend. A careful consideration should be give to the quality / value for money equation!
Consider for the functionality that your watch should serve? Every watch serves a purpose, from the most utilitarian to the most artistic. Do you want your watch to simply tell you the time or is there a ‘tool’ or function which required. Do you require a chronograph, or a date function or perhaps a watch showing a second time zone (known as a GMT)?
In what environment will you wear your watch? Are you looking for a watch suitable for daily wear, dress wear, or a watch that you might wear occasionally? If you want an everyday watch then you may consider a watch with a stainless case and bracelet and that offers water resistance and therefore durability. As a dress watch you may consider a watch made of a precious metal such as gold on a leather strap, or perhaps a slim line watch suitable for wear with a suit.
Perhaps the movement will be of the upmost importance to you? The accuracy of a ‘quartz’ movement, the elegance of an ‘automatic’ movement or the pleasure of a ‘manual wind’ will have to be considered. Also consider the provenance of the movement should you be looking at an expensive watch.
Significantly, you may wish to buy a watch to retain within your family as an heirloom. There are watch brands that pride themselves on creating such timepieces and have a history of creating timeless pieces which can appreciate in value. For this purchase time and research is essential.
I was once told that a person’s watch, like their shoes, can tell you a great deal about the person before you. A watch is an extension of your personality, and perhaps this should be the determining factor when choosing a watch.
